Embedded In Second Life
“Sweet Bye and Bye”, by Philip Mallory Jones, aka Jacque Quijote.

Mr. Jones’ works depict the richness and variety of the African experience in the Americas.  He blends photography, painting, digital imagery, (and now spoken word!!) in amazing ways.

While the original gallery exhibit is no longer "up" at the Ohio University  campus in Second Life, a fantastic machinima of the exhibit can be viewed on the link above.  The poems that accompany the visual works are read by Mr. Jones and Dorothy Mallory Jones; these monologues add yet another dimension to his work.

Be patient with the QuickTime download; it is very high resolution, and takes a couple of minutes to start.  But, it's worth the wait!

Excerpted from Electronic Arts Intermix:

“Philip Mallory Jones explores the emerging global African diaspora culture and consciousness through nonverbal storytelling and an evocative, transcultural language of sound and image construction. Jones merges experimental narrative and subjective documentary forms to synthesize what he terms the "realities of African culture and my own emotional and metaphysical odyssey.”

Sanctum Sanctorum

Sanctum Sanctorum is a lush, elaborately terraformed island complete with a Jules-Verne-like flying machine, an old sailing ship, and a pub.  It really is beautiful.

Svarga

Named after a paradise inhabited by the righteous before reincarnation, Svarga is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen yet. Click here for a discussion of Svarga’s design.  Svarga has two very cool interactive musical pieces that are lots of fun.

CMP Islands - Formerly Dr. Dobb’s Island

CMP Publications now encompasses four islands.  Dr Dobb's has been a showcase of some of the best that SL has to offer.  In addition, the amphitheater provides a forum for guest lectures.   They typically hold several lectures per week, ranging from authors to technologists.

The Tech

Created in conjunction with the The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose CA, The Tech conducts weekly collaborative events; one recent SL event was held in conjunction with a RL event at the museum.  A list of upcoming virtual events can be found here.

Intel Software Network Conference Center

I’ve attended a couple of events at the Center so far; Intel has held interactive presentations on multicore development, and Web 2.0 mashup techniques.  They seem to be enthusiastically committed to developer education in Second Life.

Eolus

Their Island demonstrates of the possibilities for interfacing their “Virtual World Communication Interface” (VWCI) with Enterprise—Class Data Servers for facilities management.  The embedded facilities protocols supported include LON, KNX, Enocean, ZigBee, CANOpen, Profibus and Modbus; the VWCI communicates to back-end  IBM servers via the MQTT (formerly SCADA) protocol.

As far as I can tell, this concept was based on the thesis of graduate student Panini Lane, although I haven’t been able to get my hands on a copy of it yet.  There’s a HUGE write-up of it on on UgoTrade.org here.

Why use Second Life for this? Because large amounts of facilities management data can be represented graphically, in 3D...And, they describe tailoring the data to the viewer; financial data to the finance dept, facility status to facilities managers, etc.

Amazon Developer's Island

The Island hosts an "Amazon Web Services Developer Chat" every Thursday at 10:00 AM SLT.  They began holding sessions in 2/2008.
It's a great opportunity to ask questions regarding current or desired
features within the Amazon Web Services offerings.

Manpower Island

On 2/19/08, they posted an RL job offering: SL Community Manager.  Requires French fluency and relocation to Ireland...The first "real"
non-volunteer, non-academic job offering I've seen in SL to date.
